Improving the Production and Value Chain of Tomato Farming

Egyptian sun-dried tomato exports exceed $100 million annually. They are exported to Italy, the USA, France, and Arab countries, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. The center of Esna in Luxor is a major supplier, with more than 20,000 feddans of dried tomatoes harvested. This project is being implemented to improve crop productivity and reduce crop losses, through analyzing the value chain and adding value during production and marketing stages. It also seeks to increase the income of young farmer and build their capacities through:

  • Encouraging 300 small farmers to use clean energy.
  • Strengthening contract farming and creating a marketing network.
  • Improving technical skills and building manufacturing capacities.
  • Training farmers to apply precautionary measures to limit the spread of Coronavirus during planting, harvesting, and post-harvesting processes.
