Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)

TaRL is a methodology developed by the Indian NGO Pratham to improve children’s basic skills by grouping them according to their academic level, rather than their educational stage. This methodology was applied in more than 20 countries around the world. More than 15 impact studies were conducted to demonstrate its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes for students in the upper grades of primary school.

The project aims to enable children aged 9 to 16 years to acquire foundational reading and arithmetic skills over two years, mainly through:

  • Improving reading and arithmetic skills of 10,000 male and female students.
  • Building the capacity of teachers, volunteers, and mentors to plan, implement, and follow up on TaRL program activities with students enrolled in the upper grades of the primary stage.
  • Transferring students among different groups as their learning outcomes improve.
