The Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees consists of leaders of Egyptian society and experts in their field who volunteer their time to oversee the Foundation’s activities. Many of them provide unique services, including business and financial expertise and organizational development consulting services.
The Board meets a minimum of three times per year. Its responsibilities include setting the Foundation’s strategic vision, assisting in selecting and monitoring projects, ensuring adherence to all legal and ethical norms, and maintaining a high degree of accountability. In trying to be as responsive as possible to the community, the board members also meet on an as-needed basis when issues arise.
Mr. Onsi Sawiris
Advisor to the Board, Founder of Orascom Group
In 1976, Mr. Onsi Sawiris founded Orascom, a leading private sector contractor working in partnership with international companies. Mr. Sawiris is Chair of Orascom Construction Industries, the Egyptian Cement Company (ECC), Orascom Trading Company, Orascom Technology Systems, AIG Insurance, the YMCA in Cairo, and the Egyptian–Scandinavian Business Association in Egypt. He is Honorary Chair and member of the Board of Directors of Mobinil. Mr. Onsi Sawiris has been awarded an honorary Doctoral Degree in recognition of his contribution to business and philanthropy.
Mrs. Yousriya Loza Sawiris

Mrs. Loza-Sawiris is Chairman and Managing Director of Enhancement of Integrated Services and Waste Recycling. She serves on the Boards of The Social Fund for Development, Egyptian Water and Wastewater Regulatory Agency, The National Council for Women, The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, and the Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE). She is a Founder and Chairman of “I the Egyptian” and the “Banabt El-Ghad-Banati” Organizations for Street Children, and the Egyptian Liver Care Society. She is a member of the Consultative Council for Legislative Affairs in the transitional period following the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. She has been recognized for her service to society at both a national and international level.

Mr. Naguib Sawiris

Mr. Naguib Sawiris founded Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) and led it to become the leading regional telecom player until the much-publicized merger deal with VEON (formerly VimpelCom Ltd.), creating the world’s sixth largest mobile telecommunications provider in April 2011. Mr. Sawiris is Executive Chairman of Orascom Investment Holding, a holding company investing in industries that are critical to shaping the future, including financial services, food industries, real estate development, cultural development, logistics and transport.
Mr. Sawiris is Chairman of La Mancha Holding, the private natural resource investment vehicle of the Sawiris family group with equity investments in Evolution Mining, Endeavour Mining and Golden Star Resources. He is also Chairman of Ora, a company undertaking high-end real estate developments in various prime locations around the world. In 2015, the Sawiris family acquired a majority stake in Euronews where Mr. Naguib is Chairman of the board. The Sawiris family also has ownership in several assets in the media business in Egypt.
At international and regional levels, Mr. Sawiris served and is serving on a number of boards, committees and councils including International Advisory Committee to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), International Advisory Board to the National Bank of Kuwait, London Stock Exchange Group’s Africa Advisory Group, External Advisory Council to the Global Institute for Advanced Study at NYU, the Boards of Trustees of Nile University (NU), the French University in Egypt (UFE), and the Arab Thought Foundation.
Mr. Sawiris is also the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, industry awards and civic honors, including the “Legion d’Honneur“ (the highest award given by the French Republic for outstanding services rendered to France). In July 2011 Mr. Sawiris was awarded the Honor of Commander of the Order of the “Stella della Solidarietà Italiana” (Star of Italian Solidarity). In 2006, the prestigious “Sitara-e-Quaid-e-Azam” award was conferred upon him by General Pervez Musharref for services rendered to the people of Pakistan in the field of telecommunication, investments and social sector work. Mr. Sawiris holds a diploma of Mechanical Engineering with a Masters in Technical Administration from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zürich) and a Diploma from the German Evangelical School, Cairo, Egypt.
Mr. Hazem Hassan

Mr. Hazem Hassan is President of the Egyptian Society of Accountants and Auditors, and a Board member of the Central Bank of Egypt, the Egyptian Capital Markets Authority, and the Investment Authority. He is Chair of the Central Bank’s Audit Committee and the External Audit Committee of the IMF. He is also a member of the Accounting Standard Setting Committee of the Government Audit Organization, President of the Fédération des Experts Comptables Méditerranéens, and Chairman of the British–Egyptian Business Association.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin

Dr. Ismail Serageldin is Professor of a groundbreaking International Chair in Knowledge against Poverty at the College de France in Paris. He was Vice-President of the World Bank in the 1990s. He has published more than 60 books and over 200 papers and received 30 Honorary Doctorate Degrees, as well as France’s Legion d’honneur and Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun.
Mrs. Mona Zulficar
Board Member, Senior Partner, and Chairperson of Zulficar & Partner Law Firm
Mrs. Mona Zulficar is a Head of the Banking and Capital Markets Group within the Firm and a member of the Egyptian Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Egyptian Society for Economics, Statistics, and Legislation, the National Council for Human Rights, and the Egyptian Society for International Law. She chairs the Women’s Health Improvement Association. She served on the Board of the Central Bank of Egypt. Mrs. Mona Zulficar holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Cairo University and an LLB Degree in Law from Mansoura University.
Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid
Board Member, Executive Director of CEDARE
Minister Ebeid was Egypt’s first Minister of the Environment and the first woman minister to hold this position in the Arab world. She is currently Executive Director of CEDARE and serves as chair and board member of many other organizations. Minister Ebeid was Special Peace Envoy of the Secretary-General of the Arab League and has a long-standing professional record with the UN in the field of international development cooperation.
Mr. Nassef Sawiris

Mr. Nassef Sawiris became CEO of Orascom Construction Industries in 1998 and has since expanded the family business into an international corporation. He serves on the boards of Lafarge and the Cairo and Alexandria Stock Exchanges. He is Director of the Dubai International Financial Exchange. Mr. Sawiris is also a member of the American Chamber of Commerce, the Egyptian-Belgium Business Association, and Egypt’s International Economic Forum. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago..
Eng. Samih Sawiris
Board Member, Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Orascom Development Holding (ODH)
Starting with one hotel, a few villas, and a marina, Mr. Samih Sawiris has grown El Gouna, located in a remote spot on the Red Sea coast, into an internationally-renowned resort. Mr. Sawiris is founder and Chair of Orascom Hotels and Development and the owner and operator of 22 hotels in El Gouna and Taba. He is currently developing a luxury resort in the Alpine village of Andermatt in Switzerland. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.
Mrs. Hala Hashem

Mrs. Hala Hashem was admitted to the Supreme Court of Egypt in 2002. She is a member of the Egyptian Bar Association, Egyptian Association for International Law, and Egyptian Swiss Friendship Association. She earned an LLB from Cairo University in 1979 and her LL.M from Harvard University in 1984. Mrs. Hashem has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from The American University in Cairo.
Mr. Osama Bishai
Board Member, Chief Executive Officer of Orascom Construction Limited
Mr. Osama Bishai is a Board member of Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) and one of the team who established the construction business within US affiliate, Contrack International. He has worked closely with strategic technological partners including UHDE, Foster Wheeler, Vinci, Belfmger and Eiffage/EDF. From 1998 – 2003, Mr. Bishai successfully introduced OCI to the Oil and Gas Construction Field and also contributed to the development of OCI’s venture in the nitrogen-based fertilizer business. Mr. Bishai has a BSC in Structural Engineering from Cairo University and a Diploma in Construction Management from the American University in Cairo.
Late Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Shaker
Chairman, Chairman of the Board of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs
Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Shaker was the Vice-Chair of the Board of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs; Chair of the Board of the Regional Information Technology Institute. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Shaker was Ambassador from the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United Kingdom (1988-1997) and to Austria. He served on the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna (1986-1988). He has also held a number of positions at the UN, including UN Deputy Permanent Representative (1984-1986), member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (1993 – 1998), Chair of the Advisory Board for 1995, and member of the UN Expert Group on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education (2001-2002). He holds a degree in Law from Cairo University and a PhD in Political Science from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, University of Geneva.
Late Dr. Ibrahim Shihata
The late Dr. Ibrahim Shehata was Former Senior Vice-President and General Counsel of the World Bank, Secretary–General of the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest international jurists of the 20th Century, was an internationally-recognized expert on legal and economic issues. During his lifetime, he served Egypt, the Arab region, and the world in many capacities, and received recognition for his service from business, academia, and society. An expert on international development, he held an unwavering commitment to the cause of poverty reduction.
